Back-to-School Safety: 5 Self-Defense Habits Every Child Should Know Before the First Bell

Walk through the front doors. Breathe in the scent of fresh floor wax and new notebooks. For many children in Chesterville and North Dundas, the first bell brings a mix of excitement and "butterflies." As parents, we want our kids to focus on making friends and acing their math tests, but deep down, we also want to know they are safe. We want them to move through the world with a sense of quiet capability rather than fear.
Transforming that "back-to-school" anxiety into focused confidence doesn't require a black belt or a scary lecture. It starts with simple, life-saving habits that become second nature. At Vanguard Self-Defense Academy, we believe safety is a skill, not a secret. We see children arrive at our mats looking at their feet, and we watch them leave standing tall with their heads held high.
“True confidence is the ability to walk into any room and know you can handle whatever happens.”
Are you ready to give your child the tools they need for a successful, safe school year? Let’s dive into the five essential habits every student should master before the first bell rings.
🛡️ Habit 1: The "Check First" Rule (La Règle de Vérifier d'Abord)
Start every journey with a partnership. The "Check First" rule is the foundation of safety for younger children (ages 6-9) and a vital communication tool for teens. It’s simple: before changing plans, accepting a gift, or going anywhere with anyone, your child must Check First with a parent or the trusted adult in charge.
- Establish a "Safety Circle": Sit down together and name the "Safe Adults" in their life: teachers, the school secretary, or the crossing guard.
- Practice the Ask: Role-play scenarios where a friend's parent offers a ride or a neighbor asks for help. The response is always: "I need to check with my mom/dad first."
- Build the Habit: This isn't about being "polite." It’s about building a bridge of trust between you and your child.
When children know they have a safety net, they stop feeling vulnerable. They start feeling empowered.
🦁 Habit 2: Take Up Space (Occuper l'Espace)
Watch your child walk across the living room. Are they hunched over? Are they looking at the floor? Bullies and "tricky people" look for "easy targets": children who appear nervous or small. We teach our students to Take Up Space.

- The "Power Stance": Encourage them to stand with feet shoulder-width apart, shoulders back, and chin up. (Posture. Presence. Power.)
- Make Eye Contact: Making brief eye contact signals that you are aware and alert. It says, "I see you, and I am not afraid."
- Walk with Purpose: Even if they are just heading to the library, we teach them to walk as if they have an important appointment.
By changing how they carry their bodies, children change how they feel inside. They move from shy to strong, from nervous to notable.
🗣️ Habit 3: The Loud Voice (La Voix Forte)
Believe it or not, the most powerful tool your child has isn't a kick: it’s their voice. Many children are taught to be "quiet" and "polite" at all costs. In our Kids & Teens Jiu-Jitsu programs, we flip the script. We teach them that they have the right to set boundaries.
- Use Clear Words: Practice phrases like "STOP. I don’t like that!" or "NO. Stay back!"
- Project from the Belly: This isn't a scream; it’s a command. A strong voice attracts adult attention and can stop a confrontation before it starts.
- The "Stop" Hand: Pairing a loud voice with a firm hand gesture (palm out) creates a physical and verbal barrier.
“Your voice is your first line of defense; use it like a shield.”
👁️ Habit 4: The 5-Second Rule for Awareness (L'Éveil)
Scan the room. Notice the exits. See the people. We call this "Situational Awareness," but for kids, we call it the 5-Second Rule. Whenever they enter a new space: a cafeteria, a bus, or a park: they take 5 seconds to look around.

- Heads Up, Phones Away: We live in a world of screens, but safety happens in the real world. Keep the phone in the bag while walking.
- Spot the "Helpers": Ask your child, "If you needed help right now, who would you run to?"
- Trust the "Uh-Oh" Feeling: If something feels "weird" or "wrong," we teach kids to listen to that intuition immediately. Don't wait. Move.
Awareness isn't about being paranoid; it's about being prepared. (Observe. Assess. Act.)
🏃 Habit 5: Escape First (S’échapper d’abord)
If a situation turns physical, the goal is never to "win the fight": the goal is to Escape First. At Vanguard, our anti-bullying curriculum focuses on practical, reality-based movements to break a grab and run to safety.
- Break the Grip: We teach students how to rotate their wrists and use leverage to slip out of a hold, regardless of the other person's size.
- Distance is Safety: The moment they are free, they don't look back. They run to a safe adult or a "safe place" (the office, a store, a group of people).
- Functional Fitness: Building the strength and endurance to move quickly gives children the physical confidence to know they can get away.
Escape. Distance. Safety.
